Its area is 82,931 km2. It has a Latitude 32o4’30 ″ N at 35o12’N and a Longitude of 78o0’30 ″ W at 83o20’W. Its capital is Columbia with a population of 4,407,709 inhabitants.

After the independence of the United States, in 1783, South Carolina would ratify the Constitution of the United States of America, on May 23, 1788, becoming the 8th state of the Union.

South Carolina is bordered to the north by North Carolina, to the east by the Atlantic Ocean and to the southwest by Georgia. The main river in South Carolina is the Santee River, whose hydrographic basin covers about 40% of the State. It is also the longest river in the state. The largest lakes in the state were created through dams.

It has a plain full of forests, with a slightly more undulating relief in the interior and the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the northwest. The coastal area is very low, with large marshes and fairly warm water beaches because of the Gulf Stream.
